From a design standpoint, the Nokia N97 is a bit of a handful at 4.6 x 2.1 x 0.6 inch dimensions and 5.29 ounces weight. Nokia N97 has a new widget-based home screen feature that gives you the freedom to customize the home screen and lets you see more information at a glance as well as have one-touch access to your applications. At one time, you can have up to eight widgets on the screen that’s also easy to rearrange or remove. This feature is quite similar to the Samsung Omnia TouchWiz interface, but with better organization and didn't limit you to certain widgets.

This latest smartphones also has a task manager that lets you see all your open applications and switch between them. You can also personalize the device with various themes, wallpaper, and more. As one feature-packed smartphone, Nokia N97 comes with a Symbian operating system with 32GB of internal flash memory, expandable to 48GB via the expansion slot. The application preloaded including Guitar Rock Tour, AP News, Psiloc World Traveler, Boingo Wi-Fi service, Qik (for sharing videos from your phone), and a dedicated YouTube player. These are, of course, on top of S60 platform staples like QuickOffice for viewing PowerPoint, Excel, and Word documents, a file manager, Adobe PDF, and other PIM tools, such as a voice recorder, a clock, a measurement converter, a notepad, a calculator, and a Zip manager.

The device comes with either the phone's integrated Wi-Fi or tri-band HSDPA (850/1900/2100MHz) connectivity. This latest smartphones can be synchronized with Microsoft Exchange and it also works with SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, and Lotus Notes accounts with a full attachment viewer. As a phone, the N97 offers quad-band world roaming (GSM 850/900/1800/1900), text and multimedia messaging, a vibrate mode, voice-command support, conference calling, speed dial, and a speakerphone. For caller ID purposes, you can assign each contact a custom ringtone, a group ID, or a photo. Bluetooth 2.0 is also available, with support for mono and stereo Bluetooth headsets, file transfer, dial-up networking, object push, audio/video remote control, hands-free kits, and more.

A standalone and assisted GPS are also onboard, so it uses both satellites and cellular triangulation to find your position and navigating the streets. This latest smartphones also comes preloaded with the Nokia Maps application coupled with a built-in compass that will automatically orient the map to the direction you are heading in.

The device has a 5-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, available with some useful features, including 4x digital zoom, auto focus, dual-LED flash, geotagging, exposure, light sensitivity, and color tone. The picture quality is sharp, crisp, and clear with vibrant and rich color. The camera can be used to record MPEG-4 videos at a maximum VGA resolution (640x480) at 30fps. Video quality is above average.

The built-in media player supports eAAC+, AAC+, AAC, WMA, and MP3 files. The phone can be used to listen to Internet radio and an FM tuner. The device comes with a 1500mAh lithium ion battery with talk time up to 95 hours (GSM) and standby up to 17.9 days (GSM).
